Girl Scouts Help Young Writers with Summer Writing Projects @ Pequot Library

Southport, CT – Local Girl Scout and Fairfield Ludlowe High School junior, Elizabeth Van Winkle, plus a hand-selected team of other Girl Scouts will lead writing sessions for children in grades 2 – 5, starting on Tuesday August 6, 4:15 – 5:00pm, at Pequot Library. Help with Summer Writing Projects focuses on motivation and gentle critiques for help with a summer writing project due when school resumes. This program is free and open to the public. Van Winkle, who is in Girl Scout Troop 33056, writes for The Prospect, Fairfield Ludlowe High School's premier student newspaper.

If your child is stuck on a school summer writing assignment, book report, or just wants to write about a summer experience or memory, this team of Girl Scout teens, well-versed in essay writing can help. They'll share pointers, inspire, motivate, and guide the youngsters to a successful outcome. Attend any or all sessions. Sessions meet August 6, 8, 13, 15. Registration encouraged. Location starts in the Children's Room at Pequot Library and the group will move outside, in the shade on the Great Lawn, weather permitting. Contact: (203) 259-0346, ext. 18 for further information and to register.

Van Winkle's project is part of a Girl Scout Gold Award Project. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in the Girl Scout program and is earned by girls and young women in grades 9 -12. Each girl identifies an issue in the community and develops a take-action project that addresses this issue. The Girl Scout leads others in the implementation of this project, which is designed to continue to serve the community.

Van Winkle says, "I've been going to Pequot Library since I was a little kid. Because I really like writing I've helped my sister when she struggled with writing. I thought if I could help her, I could help other kids. Pequot is a little bit small and it feels homey. I know where everything is. It's just a nice place."

Help with Summer Writing Projects will include simple writing prompts to more complex. Van Winkle gives an example, "We'll give an individualized simple prompt like 'Write a letter to your best friend.' We'll also give one like 'Magical bunny crosses the galaxy.' If kids hate story writing, we'll come up with something they do like to write about."

Susan Ei, Pequot Library's Children Librarian says, "I am really fabulously excited about this offering. Young adults teaching kids is a great mix. Writers teaching writers. It's a very timely program, usually kids procrastinate. To have a resource in place, ready to go, to help them in the summer is tailor made to the needs of the school curriculum."

The Girl Scout Gold Award Project involves a formal proposal which includes: impact planning, a detailed project plan, the take-action project itself, a project proposal timeline, completing prerequisite programs and awards, and selecting a team to work with, on the take-action project. Van Winkle works with a Girl Scout advisor, and her project team consists of Pequot Library's Children's Librarian, plus eight Girl Scouts from Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Warde High Schools.
