Town Receives Grant for New LED Lights

Wed. Feb. 8 -- Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau announced that the Town of Fairfield has signed a $138,060 agreement with the United Illuminating Company to replace the 114 existing decorative lights along the Post Road in Fairfield Center with highly efficient Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lights, and to replace or repair existing poles and fixtures.

The agreement does not require any new appropriation from the Town.  The $138,060 cost includes an incentive, or grant of $15,297 and a zero interest loan of $100,000. The loan is paid back by the savings in the UI bills over four years.  The final $22,763 Town share will pay for repairs that are included in the existing Public Works budget.

This new technology allows the Town to use much lower wattage bulbs than are currently in place and get the same or better lighting results.  Moreover, the LED lights have a life four times the conventional bulbs, saving thousands of dollars a year in maintenance and replacement costs.

First Selectman Mike Tetreau said, “The project will also save Fairfield tax dollars in two other ways: (1) The LED lights will burn far less hours, and (2) The electricity will be purchased under the Town’s new electric purchase agreement.  The end result will be a projected 93% savings in electric costs for these 114 LED lights, with a payback just under five years which is good news for our taxpayers.”
