BI Cares Foundation Gives Norma Pfriem Breast Center $45K Grant

FAIRFIELD, CT – The Norma Pfriem Breast Center will continue to provide breast cancer outreach and screening programs, thanks to a grant of $45,000 from the BI Cares Foundation. This year, approximately 3,000 Connecticut women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Programs such as those at Norma Pfriem Breast Center are vital to beating breast cancer locally.

The Norma Pfriem Breast Care Center’s outreach and screening program helps women with language, cultural and economic barriers receive breast cancer screening. The program provides culturally appropriate outreach, group and one-on-one education, personal assistance, and timely access to low cost breast cancer screening.  The Norma Pfriem Breast Center holds open houses and workshops throughout the community to reach underserved women through the Mujer a Mujer/Woman to Woman Outreach and Screening Program.

“These funds will provide much needed services to women without health insurance who cannot pay for screening and diagnostic tests and procedures on their own,” says Donna Twist, PhD, the Breast Center’s Executive Director.  “We are extremely grateful to the Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation for their continued support of our programs.”

Since 1999, the Norma Pfriem Breast Center has served over 30,000 women.  Each year the NPBC provides nearly 1,000 uninsured and underinsured women with financial assistance for patient care services and educates over 5,000 women and girls about breast cancer risk.  Connecticut has one of the highest rates of breast cancer incidence in the country.  The Norma Pfriem Breast Center works to reduce the impact of the disease on our community.

Part of Bridgeport Hospital and Yale New Haven Health, the Norma Pfriem Breast Center has served more than 30,000 women and their families since it was established in 1999.   One of only 300 sites accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), the Center provides a wide range of diagnostic care and treatment at its Bridgeport Hospital, Trumbull and Fairfield locations, including medical oncology, surgical and chemotherapy services, plastic surgery, mammography and radiation therapy, and genetic risk assessment as well as opportunities to participate in clinical trials.  The Breast Center also provides comprehensive women’s wellness services, including nutrition counseling, massage and Reiki therapy, wig and prosthesis fitting, counseling, yoga, Pilates, naturopathic medicine, and other patient support activities.  The Center is a member of the prestigious National Consortium of Breast Care Centers.  For more information call 203-255-5300 or visit the Center on the web at www.bridgeporthospital.org/cancer/breast.

Bridgeport Hospital, part of Yale New Haven Health, is a 383-bed acute care hospital (plus 42 beds licensed to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital) serving parts of Fairfield and New Haven counties. The hospital admits more than 20,000 patients and receives nearly 300,000 outpatient treatments annually. The Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital is the only burn center in the state and one of only 64 verified burn centers in the United States.
