Dr. Lisa Miller to Speak About Her Book, "The Spiritual Child"

Southport, CT - Lisa Miller, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology and Education at Columbia University Teachers College, and Founder of its Spirituality Mind Body Institute, will be giving a FREE presentation on Sunday, September 23, 7 p.m.-9 p.m., at Southport Congregational Church. This program is not affiliated with any religious group or sector.

In her book, The Spiritual Child; The New Science of Parenting for Health and Lifelong Thriving. Dr. Miller details the clear, scientific link between spirituality and health, and uniquovically demonstrates how children who have a positive, active relationship with spirituality are: 40% less likely to use and abuse substances; 60% less likely to be depressed as teenagers; and are 80% less likely to have dangerous or unprotected sex. Combining cutting edge research with broad anecdotal evidence from her work as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Miller illustrates how invaluable spirituality is to a child’s mental and physical health. Dr. Miller translates these findings into practical advice for parents, giving them concrete ways to develop and encourage their children’s – as well as their own – well-being.

Dr. Miller has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, and NBC Today Show for her work in this area, and is frequently cited in print and on-line media.

A graduate of Yale University, Dr. Miller received her doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and has been published in top research journals including: JAMA-Psychiatry, American Journal of Psychiatry, and the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. In addition, Dr. Miller is the Editor of The Oxford Handbook of Psychology and Spirituality; is Co-Editor of the APA journal, Spirituality in Clinical Practice; and has been elected as a Fellow by the American Psychological Association. Her innovative research focuses on quantifiable effects of spirituality in regards to its positive impact on our health, resilience, thriving, as well as its impact on our living an overall joyful life – not just with children, but across the lifespan. Her clinical and consultation work focuses on spiritual awareness and spiritual growth for individuals, families, groups and organizations. She lives in Connecticut with her husband and three children.
