New Paradigm Theatre's Annual Gala Concert: May 5

Ever wonder what it might be like to be a NY casting director choosing the next big star for Broadway?

New Paradigm Theater’s (NPT) annual Gala Concert will let you do just that! NPT is turning the first half of their non-profit’s annual Gala concert into an American Idol-style casting session with finalists chosen from over 150 applications for the rock star role of “Conrad Birdie” in its summer production.

Attendees will get to “cast” the title role of Bye Bye Birdie by voting for their favorite on May 5th. The Gala will be hosted by Emmy nominee Scott Bryce and will feature our finalists performing their callbacks. In addition to the audience votes, the creative team for the summer production will be in attendance, including New York director, Courtney Lane Self, musical director, Chris Coogan and Broadway veteran and Artistic Director Kristin Huffman.

While the votes are being counted, the second half of the show will feature NPT youth and our favorite NPT Broadway and film pros performing interesting versions of the famous songs from its summer production.

WSHU and NPR’s Randye Kaye (cast as Mrs. Mae Peterson) will be featured, as well as Broadway’s Janelle Robinson, Gwendolyn Jones, Kristin Huffman and local professionals Christian Cardozo, Blanca Grande and Barbara Distinti.

NPT is well known for its inventive productions that are presented with multi-cultural, multi-generational and multi-gendered casting.  Huffman says, “This company is a theatre with a social conscience.  We produce events and shows that not only entertain with Broadway pros, but that also connect directly to our community.  Our youth board of directors volunteer for soup kitchens, senior homes, and a variety of young leader events. At a time in our country where youth-led events are taking center stage, we hope we can contribute young leaders through our theatre’s work”.

This benefit helps to raise funding for NPT’s educational programming. Much in-need youth were able to participate last year in productions and training due to events like this.
