February is National Bird Feeding Month
Celebrate National Bird Feeding Month with The Connecticut Audubon Society—your go-to resource in Fairfield for everything birds. Start with learning all about the winged visitors to your bird feeders at an Intro to Backyard Birding class--offered 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Sat. Feb. 8 at the Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr St.; or Tues., Feb. 11 at Birdcraft, 314 Unquowa Rd. Kids Day Off Camp – (Fri., February 14, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)
When schools are closed on Friday, Feb. 14, children ages 4 to 8 will have fun Valentine's Day adventures at Connecticut Audubon in Fairfield. From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr St., we’ll go outside to discover what animals do in the winter, then head indoors to play games, make crafts and meet Center animals up close. Winter Bird Walk – Join the Great Backyard Bird Count (Sat. February 15, 9 a.m.)
Join bird watchers around the world in an annual citizen science project, Saturday, Feb. 15, at 9 a.m., at Connecticut Audubon in Fairfield. During this guided winter walk, for novice bird watchers and life-long birders alike, we’ll collect wild bird data as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count. The information on birds sighted during this walk in the Larsen Sanctuary will be entered into the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s eBird database to help understand how bird populations are changing from year to year. “Whoooooo” will you see and hear under the light of the moon? Find out when Connecticut Audubon hosts an Owl Prowl, Friday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. at the Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr St. Ryan McLean will lead this nocturnal adventure in the Larsen Sanctuary, calling and looking for winter owls. Sharpen your senses by taking in the sights and sounds of a winter night when the trails and their inhabitants become a whole new experience. For ages 8 and up. CAS members $7, non-members $10. Simple Ways to Welcome Nature to Your Yard (Sat. February 29, 10:30 a.m.)
Learn how adding native plants to your landscape design can bring your yard to life with colorful native birds, butterflies and other wildlife. The Connecticut Audubon Society’s Executive Director Patrick Comins presents this program on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 10:30 a.m., at the Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr Street. Hear how converting your yard to the natural biodiversity that feeds pollinators can make even the most suburban of neighborhoods a friendlier place for both nesting and migrating birds. Junior Animal Care Keeper (Tuesdays, through Feb. 18, 3:30 to 5 p.m.)
Connecticut Audubon’s after-school program for 6th and 7th graders to study, and help care for, the Center’s resident education animals. Meets at the Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr Street in Fairfield, on Tuesdays, 3:30 to 5 p.m. Learn about the health and dietary needs of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Adirondack Night (Saturday, March 7, 6 to 9 p.m.)
Connecticut Audubon’s Center at Fairfield, 2325 Burr Street, is transformed into a rustic mountain lodge for the annual Adirondack Night-Howl at the Moon event, Saturday, March 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. This casual, ”fleece and flannel evening” includes lively music, hearty food, open bar, local craft beers, auctions and a bonfire.
