Sickle Cell Disease Assn. of America, So. CT's 29th Annual Walk/James Barber 5K Run Goes Virtual

New Haven, CT:  In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SCDAA.SC 29th Annual Walk / James Barber 5K run will be a virtual event. The City of New Haven and SCDAA.SC's Board of Directors mutually agreed to cancel the onsite event. James Rawlings, SCDAA.SC Executive Director, states, "The decision to make the event virtual was not an easy one. However, safety of our participants was our priority and we did not want to risk the especially vulnerable population we are supporting."

The SCDAA.SC is excited to give participants and supporters an opportunity to take part in a fun activity while remaining safe and socially distant! Participants in the virtual event may walk or run at the time and place of their choosing between September 24th – 27th.

James Barber, 5K honoree and board member, agrees, “The event is a great way to get outside and have fun, while also supporting families in our community dealing with the daily effects of sickle cell disease."

Sickle Cell Disease Matters. The proceeds from the virtual Walk/Run event benefit Michelle’s House, home of the SCDAA.SC, whose mission is to provide education, screening, counseling and support services to those with sickle cell disease or the sickle cell trait. Their innovative tutorial and public awareness programs enhance the quality of life and wellbeing of the community affected by the genetic blood disease.

Registration for the event can be completed online at jbsports.com. Event participants will receive a bib and logo t-shirt prior to the virtual event. Results will be self-reported and compiled into a race results database. Event organizers are looking for your support through participation, sharing on social media, and even fundraising! Yes, you can create your own fundraising webpage and help support the virtual Walk/Run event. Contact Jody at JB Sports for more information: jody@jbsports.com
