Breaking Out of “The Man Box”: Mark Greene to Speak at Trinity Spiritual Center

SOUTHPORT, CT – Trinity Spiritual Center will host an exclusive, in-person and livestream event with writer, activist, and speaker on men’s issues, Mark Greene, on Sunday, October 24th at 3:00 PM. Mr. Greene will address a topic with universal relevance: How our emotionally stoic “man box” culture of masculinity is deeply isolating for men, destroying relationships and causing an epidemic of violence, sexual assault, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicide among men. This special event is free and open to all; no affiliation with the church is required.

The author of The Little #MeToo Book for Men, and co-author with Dr. Saliha Bava of The Relational Book for Parenting. A Senior Editor for The Good Men Project, Mark has spent over a decade deconstructing binary-riddled dialogues around manhood and masculinity. Mark consults on masculinity, relational practices, and inclusion for organizations worldwide. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Salon, The Shriver Report, The Huffington Post, HLN, BBC, and The Guardian.

The event will feature a conversation between Greene and Mark Grayson, Founding Director of Trinity Spiritual Center, who is also a Featured Columnist on The Good Men Project. The two men will lay out the basic framework of “Man Box” culture and the ways in which it’s deeply conditioned into boys and men from infancy. Their discussion will be followed by Q&A with the audience. Mr. Greene’s essay, “Yes, Men Have Been Cheated,” is recommended reading in advance of the event. It provides an overview of the set of expectations and rules that make it difficult for men to exit this cultural construct.

Greene’s mission—to inform and support the emerging movement to help men “Break Out of Man Box Culture” and create more authentic connection and community—could not be more timely.

For millions of men, masculinity can seem like a foregone conclusion, mapped out for us by universally understood rules for being a “real man.” These rules determine how we walk, how we talk, what we think and do, what we view as our responsibilities and most importantly, how we pursue or fail to pursue our deepest needs, wants and desires. When millions of men live our lives subject to the rules of a culture we are not fully conscious of, it can be damaging for our families, our communities, our collective quality of life, and even our longevity.”

-Mark Greene, The Little #MeToo Book for Men

Trinity Spiritual Center is pleased to host this event, the first in a series of three thought-provoking conversations over the next year. A second session on this issue will be held for men only on November 20. While there is no charge for participation in either event, registration is required (details below).

“We are pleased to welcome Mark Greene to our community and eagerly await his and Mark Grayson’s ideas as to how we can reframe our thinking and behaviors so that men and women experience greater sense of well-being and deeper connection in their lives,” Peggy Hodgkins, Rector at Trinity Episcopal Church says. “Friends everywhere are welcome to join us for this special event.”

Grayson adds, “Mark has a deep understanding of the cultural conditioning that bedevils men and prevents us from experiencing the full scope of our humanity. We hope that this conversation will help men begin to develop a healthier, more connected vision of the possibilities inherent in being unabashedly, yet responsibly male.”
