Fairfield Boy Scout Troop 90 Blasts Off with Space Exploration Badge

Fairfield, CT - BSA Troop 90 recently completed the final stage of their Space Exploration merit badge by launching rockets hundreds of feet into the air.

The Space Exploration merit badge teaches Scouts about the history of manned and unmanned space flight; discusses careers in space exploration; and gives them the opportunity to build, launch and recover a model rocket. Troop 90's Scouts did exactly that when they completed the final stage of their merit badge by firing their rockets.

Significant work went into assembling the rockets ahead of time, including the parachute, recovery wadding, and engine. Every rocket successfully launched, but they came down in a wide variety of conditions, some in better shape than others.

Since 1959, at least two-thirds of the pilots and scientists selected as astronauts were Scouts. What's more, an astronomically high half of space shuttle missions (67 of 135) included at least one Eagle Scout.

Although it was a lot of work, the Scouts were pleased to see their rockets fire into the air -- and justifiably proud to finish the final stage of their merit badge. You might call it rocket science!
