Pequot Library to Launch Redesigned Website

Southport, CT – Pequot Library launches its revamped website on August 21, 2018. The site’s homepage welcomes visitors with generously donated drone footage of the attractive outside of the 130-year-old picturesque library. Photographs of the historic building and information about Pequot’s unique Special Collections of rare books, manuscripts, and archives are featured throughout. Content for library services centers on easier access to browse new books and on the Library’s mission to bring literature, music, art, science, and the humanities to the community.

Among the highlights of the redesigned site is the optimization for viewing on mobile devices. Additionally, website visitors can see newly-acquired book covers and learn more about the books, they can register for upcoming programs, and can add events to their personal online calendars. Visually challenged site visitors have the option of viewing a larger font size and Pequot’s quarterly program brochure will be available as a flip book. The dramatically redesigned site was created by Julia Balfour, LLC, an award-winning integrated agency in East Haddam, CT that specializes in strategy, marketing, design, content, programming, and social media.

Pequot’s new site embodies the Library’s forward-thinking vision and commitment to the growing needs of its patrons. Based on a patron survey and extensive research with librarians, other arts and cultural organizations, and Library users, the website offers rich content, streamlined searching, and intuitive navigation. The site features the launch of an online searchable catalog of a selection of Pequot’s historical and literary treasures from its Special Collections. The new website was made possible with donations raised during Fairfield County’s Giving Day in 2017 and 2018, Friends of Pequot Library, Fairfield County’s Community Foundation, and an anonymous donor. What remains the same about the Library’s website is the domain name, pequotlibrary.org, the ability to donate online, to view the comprehensive calendar of events, to check out books and review accounts, and to read past annual reports.

A national treasure to be discovered, Pequot Library, a public association, nonprofit organization, is a vibrant programming library where visitors of all ages arrive for high-impact cultural events and leave enriched and inspired. The two-year website research process involved interviewing many web design agencies and web developers, plus receiving proposals from developers from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania.

“We then focused locally, and many good proposals came in, some from right here in Fairfield and Fairfield County,” said Adair Heitmann, Pequot’s director of communications. “It was a challenging decision, because we wanted a site with a strong visual presence and improved usability for our patrons and scholars. It had been eight years since we revamped our website and we wanted to show our dedication to culture and the arts while at the same time being a community gathering place. Our motivation was for the site to be current and contemporary as well as reflect Pequot Library’s 130-year unique history. The Julia Balfour agency was terrific at helping us reach these goals while adhering to a modest budget. Everyone at the agency was professional, talented, and fun to work with.”
