Fairfield, CT - Roger Kenneth Kuhn Sr., 74 of Fairfield, CT, passed away quietly at home surrounded by his loved ones February 26th, 2016.
He was the son of the late Gasper "Gus" William Kuhn and late Elizabeth Sombathy Kuhn, owners of Kuhn's Corner, in Fairfield, CT. An institution of Fairfield, the family restaurant located at the corner of Black Rock Turnpike and Tunxis Hill Cutoff, spanning five decades. Kuhn's Corner was known for their roast beef sandwiches, chili dogs and famous Kuhn's Chili. It was a longtime multi-generational restaurant, fondly remembered and enjoyed by Fairfield residents and throughout the state.
Roger graduated from Andrew Warde Class of 1960. In high school, he met and later married his Lillian Adrien Choiniere, the love of his life and soulmate of 52 years. They were inseparable.
Roger left the University of Bridgeport, "School of Accounting", after 3 ½ years when his father, "Gus", needed his help as a full-time manager at the family restaurant. He enjoyed his job "every day" for 24 years, until the restaurant sold in 1987.
As manager, he wore many hats from bartender to kitchen. His hardy laugh was instantly recognizable. With his warm smile and generous character, he made strangers feel like longtime friends, and friends feel like family. This was his unique gift that he shared with the world that he embraced.
Roger was a proud member of both the Elks Club and Knights of Columbus (Father Coleman Council) Lodge #2220. Roger and his son were both members of the Newtown Fish & Game Club where they shared many memories hunting and fishing. He also loved to bowl, shoot pool and play liar poker. His poker nights were legendary and a source of many hilarious stories. There are also years of family trips to New Hampshire that account for the fondest of memories and who could forget his love for cooking. Roger truly had a heart of gold and, yes, they broke the mold.
