New Paradigm Theatre Announces Non-Profit Partner for Hunchback Production

New Paradigm Theatre (NPT) has chosen The Connecticut Burns Care Foundation as their not for profit community partner for their production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame

New Paradigm Theatre, a company well-known for its inventive productions that are presented with multi-cultural, multi-generational and multi-gendered casting has chosen their community “partner not for profit” that reflects the theme of this summer’s show.

Riding on the heels of New Paradigm Theatre’s (NPT) sold-out, multi-ethnic production of “Oliver-Reinvented”, in 2016 and Peter Pan in 2017 at Fairfield Theatre’s Warehouse space, NPT will continue their “collective impact” productions, bridging the gap between the arts and the local community, with the musical “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” on August 18th and 19th.

“Oliver” highlighted the theme of that show (poverty and hunger...to hope) by showcasing the work of their partner nonprofit partner, The Council of Churches of Greater Bridgeport which hosts soup kitchens and pantries. “Peter Pan’ highlighted the theme of stimulating a child’s imagination to create a better world by aligning with KEYS (free instrumental lessons for youth in need). By aligning with these partner non profits, NPT helped raise donations and awareness during the show and the adult and youth cast volunteered at the soup kitchen during the rehearsal process.

This year NPT chose The Connecticut Burns Care Foundation (CBCF) from the non profits who submitted. “The board of directors read Executive Director, Kathlene Gerrity’s cover letter and saw the pictures of the young people in their organization and realized it was the perfect fit” says Huffman. For 40 years, CBCF has worked to support burn survivors as well as to present programs for education and advocacy to prevent burn injuries.

“The production of Hunchback this summer is a perfect match for our peer support program because The CT Burns Care Foundation’s mission is all about inclusion; burn injuries are some of the most painful ones that a human can experience. But the scars and disfigurements often lead a survivor into a lonely existence, and mental health issues such as depression and social anxiety can stay with them for decades after the tragedy,” said Gerrity. “We are grateful to NPT and their team for the opportunity to raise awareness about burn injuries.”

Artist Director and Broadway veteran, Kristin Huffman (Milford CT) says, “New Paradigm is a theatre with a social conscience. We produce events and shows that not only entertain with Broadway pros, but that also connect directly to our community. And we are so proud of our youth board of directors who volunteer for soup kitchens, senior homes, and a variety of young leader events. At a time in our country where youth-led events are taking center stage, we hope we can contribute our young leaders through our theatre’s work”.

During the rehearsals and classes youth will participate side-by-side with Broadway pros to create this production of Hunchback, fulfilling NPT's mission of fostering creative problem solvers, leaders, and global citizens through theatre arts education and productions.

Emmy and Oscar winner Paul Bogaev will again be the musical producer as well as playing one of the leading roles. Emmy nominee, Scott Bryce and Broadway veteran Jodi Stevens will co-direct.

As partnerships between nonprofits continue to form in order to tackle social challenges from all sides, and as youth lead the way to a better world, this type of collective impact production has become increasingly relevant and a vital component of a community. Mayday for May Day! on April 29th is the theatre company’s annual benefit, held at Emmanuel Church in Weston, that will support the production and its costs as well as provide scholarships to youth in need.
