Fairfield: Turn Your Discarded Food Into Compost

Fairfield, CT - Interested in doing something beneficial with your household’s food waste instead of simply tossing it out? You can start turning your food waste into useful garden compost with a cost saving by signing up no later than Oct. 31 for a recycling program now offered through the Sustainable Fairfield Task Force. The program offers residents the option of either composting at home or curbside waste pickup.

For residents who want to recycle their food waste at home, until Oct. 31, you can purchase a home compost bin at a 25% discount (for a total of $60) from the Town of Fairfield. You can pay online with a credit card at www.bit.ly/compost_bin or send a check made out to “Town of Fairfield” to Solid Waste and Recycling/SFTF, 725 Old Post Road, Fairfield, CT 06824. The “Algreen Soil Saver Classic Compost Bin,” which will be delivered free to your home, lets you produce rich organic compost humus in a matter of weeks from food scraps, and kitchen and garden waste.

For residents who don’t want to recycle their food waste at home, until Oct. 31, you can sign up for curbside pickup of your discarded food including one free month of service. The offer is available from:• Action Container Service, 203-254-2050; $32/month, one month free plus free set up for Fairfield residents who, when signing up, mention the offer code. “Wasted food is a huge and growing problem – from 30 to 40 percent of the US’s food supply eventually goes to waste and, when discarded in landfills, is a major source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas,” said Becky Bunnell, a Fairfield resident who developed the recycling program working with the SFTF and the Town. “But, food waste can be readily recycled, which helps to cut emissions of harmful greenhouse gases, reduces trash hauling and disposal costs, and supports healthier gardens and lawns. Our recycling program makes it easy and cost efficient for residents to get started.”
