Westport's Cedar Point Yacht Club Wins US Sailing's One-Design Club Award

Westport’s Cedar Point Yacht Club (CPYC) has won the coveted 2018 National One-Design Award from US Sailing, the sport’s national governing body. CPYC and 13 other organizations from around the country were honored on January 31 for advancing sailing in their respective communities and areas of focus. US Sailing hosted the awards ceremony in Jacksonville, Florida, at the 2019 National Sailing Programs Symposium (NSPS). Bob Karpel, Commodore of CPYC, accepted the award on behalf of Westport’s largest racing club.

“This is truly a testament to all of CPYC’s outstanding member volunteers,” Karpel said.

CPYC was honored for its success in growing its fleet and hosting regattas that give Westport and area sailors the opportunity to test their skills against premier racing talent across the nation. CPYC is recognized nationally for the quality of its racing programs.

“In 2018, CPYC hosted eight separate regattas, including a multi-class one-design regatta with 560 sailors, the 66-boat Thistle Nationals and the annual Connecticut Special Olympics,” US Sailing said in making the award. “Regatta festivities included a bagpiper for the opening ceremonies, live bands, a lip sync competition, a corn-hole tournament, a blender party and a lobster clambake. The club also supports youth sailing. Last year it hosted the 142-boat JSA of Long Island Sound Race Week and a 78-boat Opti Area C Championship.”

In addition to its regular slate of regattas, CPYC will be hosting the Atlantic National Championships this summer and the Flying Scot Nationals in 2020. Cedar Point Yacht Club was organized in Westport in 1887 by a group of Fairfield County racing enthusiasts.
