Fairfield Library Circ Asst Sue Leiss Marks 90th Bday at Work

Fairfield, Conn. - Although she was celebrating her 90th birthday this past Tuesday, April 24, Sue Leiss worked her regular afternoon shift on the circulation desk at the Fairfield Public Library from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. It was business as usual except for some cake in the back office and a surprise visit from First Selectman Mike Tetreau who stopped by to congratulate her and thank her for 42 years of service. Leiss has been working at the Library since 1977.  She has seen two renovations and worked under four different circulation directors. After raising her three children, Leiss decided she might like to have a part-time job and the Library was one of the places she applied. The rest is history, or kismet, because Leiss found a place that she really enjoyed working. “I just love the Library,” she said, “I love the people I work with and I like getting to know the patrons – it is a nice atmosphere.”

Even an injury a few years ago didn’t dissuade her. She broke her pelvis in August but was back to work by February. She uses a walker now, but it has a handy pocket for carting books around, so she doesn’t find it a hardship. When Leiss first started working at the Library it was 12 hours a week, down to eight, and now she works four hours a week, coming in for two hour shifts on two afternoons. Everyone enjoys seeing her smiling face behind the circulation desk. Circulation Director Sue Balla, who has been working with Leiss for 16 years said, “Sue is one of the most gracious people I have ever met. Her devotion to Fairfield and the library are demonstrated every day. We all wish we had just a fraction of her strength and energy.”
