Three questions with Fairfield resident Annie Blumenfeld founder of Wags 4 Hope
Is there an organization in Fairfield that inspires you?
Wags 4 Hope! I formed my non-profit organization in 2012 after rescuing my dog from a high kill shelter in Texas. This was just days before he was to be put down since he, like so many shelter animals, tested positive for heartworm disease (HWD). Luckily, he made a full recovery. HWD is found in all 50 states and is avoidable by a monthly preventative. I am determined to help these deserving animals by educating pet owners about pet responsibility.
Is there a person or organization using creativity to provoke change in Fairfield?
In middle school, a shaggy dog I painted was selected for an art show and received a lot of attention. I decided to give all proceeds from my commissioned animal paintings to animal shelters globally to help pay for the medical needs of animals, so eventually, those animals can find their forever homes.like Teddy. To date, I painted over 350 animals in 30 states including bunnies, pigs, dogs, cats, and even a rescue cow. These paintings are a gift that saves a life.
In January 2017, I was named Operation Hope's [first ever] Pet Ambassador. Many lower-income families do not have the means to care for their beloved pets as SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] does not cover pet food. I have dropped off thousands of pet food items to food pantries all over Connecticut.
Anywhere you go in Town for inspiration and creativity?
I have lived in Fairfield for twenty-one years! It is a place where I learned how to draw and the people I have met strolling through the charming town gave me the confidence to make a difference for those in need.
My mother has been such an inspiration to me! I still remember fondly at age four we went hand in hand to pack cans of food at the Connecticut Food Bank. She looked down at me and said, “You are never too young to make a difference and use your tools to make an impact in the world.” These words remain with me today!
