Tell us about an organization in your town that makes you feel good
The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce is a hardworking organization. We're proud to have designed their logo, and I get a kick out of seeing it on the doors of businesses all around town.
I feel indebted to the good folks who work on the community garden at the entrance to Jennings Beach at the junction of Beach Road and Fairfield Beach Road, and to the volunteers who so beautifully painted the fire hydrants in this neighborhood. And I'm a big fan of both the Fairfield Theater Company and the Fairfield Comedy Club. They bring so many great performers right to our doorstep.
Where do you go for inspiration and creativity?
I go to the beach. It's different every season, every day and every time of day. It both calms and revives me. I especially enjoy the months when dogs and horses join the mix. And I love to bring my granddaughter to the places her mom played as a child; the feeling of continuity is life-affirming. I like to walk the trails by Ash Creek — I was inspired by the nature around me and actually conceived a series of children's books in my head while on a walk. And on the trails at the Connecticut Audubon Society on Burr Street, I feed my fascination with mosses. If you see someone bent over at the base of a tree with a moss identification book in hand, it's likely to be me.
What do you love about your community?
I'm lately making good use of the Nextdoor.com app, which puts me in touch with neighbors for all sorts of help. You can get a recommendation for anything from a restaurant to a painter, find out what's happening in town, help find a lost dog, and much more. It's been especially useful during the pandemic as a way to share information and support local businesses. I think it sets an example of how social media can work for communities like ours.
