Public Meeting on Flood Insurance and Coastal Map Changes, Tues. Aug. 20

On Tuesday, August 20, from 5 pm to 8 pm in the cafeteria at Fairfield Ludlowe High School, 785 Unquowa Road, the Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) and the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (CTDEEP) will host a public outreach meeting to discuss flood insurance, coastal map changes and financial steps that the public may need to take to protect their investment.

The meeting is an open house in which residents, business owners or local organizations can stop in at any point during the 5 pm to 8 pm time period. Staff from FEMA and the CTDEEP will be available to answer questions and provide a short presentation.

Connecticut's coastal communities received updated coastal flood insurance rate map (FIRM) panels in 2013. (Fairfield and New Haven Counties received the panels on July 8, 2013). Anyone wishing to view the panels or obtain a copy may contact the Town's Plan and Zoning Department, 725 Old Post Road, at 203-256-3050.

The Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 has also made extensive changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which includes the gradual elimination of subsidized rates for Pre-FIRM structures (older homes built before the flood maps). Attached is a fact sheet that summarizes changes caused by the flood insurance reform act.

Fairfield First Selectman Michael Tetreau said, "I encourage residents to attend this meeting to view the new maps and understand the changes that are taking place to flood insurance rates."

Additional meetings, which any resident can attend, are being held from 5 pm to 8 pm:

• Thursday, August 8, 2013 – CTDEEP Marine Headquarters, 333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme

• Tuesday, August 27, 2013 – Town of Branford, Fire Department, 45 North Main Street, Branford
