Earth Animal Kicks Off 14th Annual Mitten Project Supporting CT Food Bank

Westport, CT - Since 1979, Earth Animal has been dedicated to caring for animals, people, and the Earth. EA's commitment to support families in the community heightens during times of crisis.

Since the pandemic began, the need for food in our communities is greater than ever before. The unexpected consequence of COVID-19 and the loss of jobs and income has resulted in an enormous increase in the number of people that are experiencing hunger. According to estimates, 490,000 Connecticut residents, including 131,000 children, are food insecure. Last year, Connecticut Food Bank | Foodshare distributed enough food to prepare nearly 47 million meals for people in need in Connecticut, helping people of all walks of life - children, working parents, seniors, or people living with disabilities. They are our neighbors.

The Mitten Project, now in its 14th year, is Earth Animal’s fall initiative to focus on the health and wellness of Connecticut’s community by raising vital funds to support CFB. With the support of the generous community, last year’s effort raised more than $38,000. This year, the focus is on increasing efforts to address the elevated need and reaching an even higher goal.

For EA to meet its ambitious goal, this year the Mitten Project will run from November 1st through December 31st.  With a $5.00 donation, people will be able to buy “mittens” at the Earth Animal Retail Store that they can sign and hang in the store windows. There are also fun holiday items for sale with all proceeds going towards the Mitten Project total. In addition, donation boxes will be placed at select local stores in Fairfield County during the holiday season.

Earth Animal will match every penny that has been donated.  According to Merritt Goldstein, co-founder of Earth Animal, “Our loyal customers are generous in spirit. For 14 years, the Mitten Project efforts have been incredible. I know we will all rise to the occasion to help our neighbors once again, especially now due to the pandemic.”
