Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Nancy Thorne Realtor!

Three questions with Nancy Thorne, founder of Nancy Thorne Realtor.

Why did you start your business?

I didn't START my business, the business found me. My moving truck had an accident one block from my new house in Fairfield, the entire contents of my home strewn all over the road. My new neighbor, who owned a Fairfield real estate company, ran out of her house to help me drag things to the curb and hired me amid the wreckage.

She said I "had what it takes" to be a successful Realtor because I was still moving the furniture as I cried! I've never looked back.

What is your best-selling product/service?

When my clients hire me, they get me, not a team member, an assistant, or an answering service. I conduct my business in the same personal way I did 38 years ago, making my clients' needs a priority. A real estate transaction is always driven by a significant life change and it's that understanding that enables me to help them make a transition more easily.

Technology is important but people are everything.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I use local "tried and true" plumbers, electricians, home inspectors, carpenters, floor refinishers, roofers, caterers, cleaning people, landscapers, septic, well, heating, and air conditioning contractors. I have my "A" list and they show up, clean up and answer their phones!

This list is too long to publish here but my clients get their names.

I shop for gifts and clothing at Millie Rae's in Westport, and Capri and La Moda in Fairfield. For catering, I use Pazzo Pizza, Centro, and The Pantry, all in Fairfield and wonderful.
