Local Orgs & Businesses Unite for CT Saves

CROMWELL, Conn. — Better Business Bureau Serving Connecticut is once again pledging support for Connecticut Saves, an annual campaign that serves to motivate individuals and families to take better control of their finances and achieve financial stability. As part of the national America Saves Week (February 27-March 3), we will join more than 3,000 entities, including financial institutions, government agencies, local government, and other nonprofit organizations in the call to action for everyday Americans to commit to saving successfully.

Locally, BBB will join Chelsea Groton Bank, the Connecticut Association for Human Services, the Connecticut Department of Banking, the Connecticut State Library, and the University of Connecticut for the CT Saves campaign coordinated by the UConn Extension Financial Education Program. The group will mark the week by participating in the Financial Education Expo hosted by the CT Department of Banking in coordination with the Connecticut Saves Coalition, at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28th. It will also take part in an educational meet and greet with young adults at Hartford Job Corps, where they’ll challenge students to do a “gut-check” on their finances and saving behaviors, and share information on creating a savings plan and setting financial goals. That event is set to take place on March 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m..

Throughout the week, participants will offer up savings tips on social media and encourage everyone to take the CT Saves Pledge by texting CTSaves to the number 70878. We encourage you to share these posts with your followers. Look for #CTSaves to easily find them!

“Connecticut Saves Week is a great opportunity to focus on taking financial action now to help you move forward to the financial future you desire. We want to encourage people throughout Connecticut to set a goal, make a plan, and save automatically. Taking the Connecticut Saves pledge is a great first step on your savings journey,” said Faye Griffiths-Smith, Connecticut Saves Coalition Coordinator and UConn Extension Personal Finance Educator.

In 2022, the Connecticut Saves Campaign was designated a Savings Champion for its outreach efforts, one of just 34 of the 3,100 participating organizations to receive such an honor. The actions and outreach demonstrated by the Savings Champions substantially contributed to the overall economic impact of America Saves Week. Nearly 415,000 individuals set up a new savings account or deposited into an existing savings account, depositing more than $1.14 billion during the one-week timeframe. Additionally, just over 200,000 individuals either set up automatic savings or increased the amount they save automatically.

This year’s theme, “A Financially Confident You,” allows participating organizations to address the emotions tied to finances and various barriers that make saving and reducing debt difficult. According to America Saves, financial confidence goes beyond a saver having financial literacy and a certain dollar amount that’s in their bank account. Financial confidence is the intersection of building a savings habit, knowing what resources are available to support a journey toward financial stability, and being empowered to take advantage of those resources as needed.

Just like in past years, America Saves Week will be a time to encourage our communities to do a financial check-in to get a clear view of their finances. Each day will have a theme that centers on one critical area of financial wellness.
