Ten Minutes with Dr. Shareef Jandali

Ten Minutes with Dr. Shareff Jandali, founder of Jandali Plastic Surgergy of Trumbull, CT.

1. How long have you been doing business in town?

I moved to Connecticut and opened Jandali Plastic Surgery in 2011. Our plastic surgery practice serves patients in all of Connecticut, but we see patients from New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island for feminine rejuvenation procedures.

2. How did you get started performing and offering procedures for feminine rejuvenation?

Most of our patients at Jandali Plastic Surgery are female. I concentrate on breast, body, and feminine rejuvenation. We saw that patients were increasingly concerned with the cosmetic appearance of their vaginal area and labia. In addition, women were much more aware of certain functional issues with their labia and vagina and were bringing this up during consultations for other mommy makeover procedures.

3. What are the biggest challenges with feminine rejuvenation?

Awareness of issues and being comfortable discussing them.

With regard to awareness, this is a relatively new field, but women are becoming more aware of their options. Social media, easy internet access, and well-written articles in women's magazines have contributed to better awareness. Take labiaplasty for example.  Women who have functional or cosmetic issues with excessively long or large labia minora are now undergoing labiaplasties. Labiaplasties are helping women who have problems wearing tight clothing or bathing suits, or have problems with irritation with sexual activity. Statistics from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show that the number of labiaplasties performed in 2016 increased 45 percent compared to 2015. So now that women know something can be done, they are getting more comfortable addressing these issues with their physician.

With regard to vaginal rejuvenation, this is a broad term that can include problems with vaginal laxity (feeling of a loose vagina), vaginal dryness and lack of lubrication, orgasmic issues, and stress urinary incontinence. There are multiple approved devices for vaginal and labia rejuvenation using either radiofrequency or lasers. Before some of the current devices came to market, the only thing that could slightly improve vaginal laxity was Kegel exercises. Many women still don't know that a short non-surgical office procedure can tighten the vagina and increase vaginal lubrication.

For women that leak urine when they cough or sneeze, called stress urinary incontinence, there is now an amazing non-surgical procedure called Viveve which can help.  So increasing awareness of these safe and effective non-surgical options for women is important. Once again, there has to be a certain comfort level to discuss these topics. Our female staff performs all of our non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments and patients are comfortable discussing vaginal health issues with them.

4. What should women know about feminine rejuvenation?

There are great options to improve vaginal laxity, sexual dysfunction, stress urinary incontinence, and the cosmetic appearance of the vaginal and labia area. We help women restore and revive what they have lost with time, aging, childbirth, and hormonal changes. For women who are self-conscious about their genital appearance, we help them obtain a more youthful appearance and less embarrassment with their partner.

5. How do you distinguish yourself from others that perform feminine rejuvenation?

We formed The Feminine Rejuvenation Center of Connecticut in 2015 to better serve women and increase awareness about their options. We perform a high volume of labiaplasties, which are often performed in the privacy of our office procedure room under local anesthesia. For added comfort for our surgical patients, we use a long-acting numbing agent called Exparel®, which makes labiaplasties almost pain-free.

We were the first plastic surgery practice in Connecticut with ThermiVa, a device which uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat the labia and vaginal tissues. This increases blood flow to the area and stimulates collagen production and remodeling. ThermiVa can improve skin laxity of the labia, tighten the vagina, and increase vaginal lubrication. ThermiVa is performed as a series of 3 monthly non-surgical office treatments and the results last for 1-2 years.

Viveve is one of the newest vaginal rejuvenation devices. We are proud to be the only practice in Connecticut with Viveve.  Viveve is similar to ThermiVa in that it also uses radiofrequency energy.  It is indicated for vaginal laxity, vaginal dryness and stress urinary incontinence.  We have seen spectacular results with Viveve for mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence. So if you leak urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or exercise, Viveve could be a non-surgical option for treatment.  Viveve is performed as a 1 time treatment and results also last 1-2 years.

Finally, we work with local ObGyn physicians to have comprehensive care of our patients and make sure patients have the proper vaginal health.

6. What would you say are a few secrets to your success?

We try to offer superb personalized care in a private office setting.  We only offer the best medical devices from which we have seen real results.  Patients know that they have all options available at our practice, surgical and non-surgical, depending on their wishes and needs.
