WAC Announces the Release of Thirteen Women Film Celebrating Local Women Artists

WESTPORT, Connecticut — The Westport Arts Center announced the public release of Thirteen Women, a short documentary film profiling 13 female artists, collectors and curators of Westport, CT.

The women featured in the film will be honored with a screening and reception at Westport Arts Center Wednesday, June 20th from 6:30-8:30pm. The press is invited to attend.

Thirteen Women is a continuation of The Westport Arts Center’s movement this year to put a spotlight on women in the arts. Following the momentum of 2018’s spring exhibit, Handmade: Women Reshaping Contemporary Art, and Annual Gala, Hall of Femme, this documentary short examines the inspiration, process and passion of 13 artistic, accomplished Westport women.

The film premiered at the Westport Arts Center’s Annual Gala in May, celebrating legendary women in art. Iconoclast art dealer Peggy Guggenheim was the muse of the film, which references her landmark “Exhibition by 31 Women.” This film recognizes Westport’s own “13 Women” in art.

Award-winning director and producer Douglas Tirola of 4th Row Films created the film. The Westport Arts Center is grateful for his remarkable talent and generosity.

“Westport has always benefited enormously from the abundance of talent in our community—much of it having come from women in the arts,” stated Amanda Innes, The Westport Arts Center’s Executive Director. “The women we recognize with this short film represent many, many others in their field. Whether they are arts patrons, curators, benefactors, administrators, instructors, or practicing artists themselves, they have all demonstrated commitment, support, and talent that make our community such a culturally vibrant destination.

The following 13 Westport women are featured feature in the film:

  • Stacy Bass

  • Kathie Bennewitz

  • Ann Chernow

  • Nancy Diamond

  • Helen During
