Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Stirling Design Associates, LLC!

Three questions with Stirling Design Associates owner, Julianne Stirling, ASID.

Why did you start your business?

As a designer, I moved to CT from Virginia in 1990.  Before I had a chance to interview for a job with a CT or NY design firm, people started asking me to help with their houses.  I would think, ‘as soon as I finish this client I will work for someone else.’  But the clients kept coming so I found myself in business.

Best selling product or service?

My best service is my ability to ‘see’ furnishings in their spaces before they are purchased.  This is my most valuable tool applied to kitchen and bath design, general space planning of furniture selections, and the use of Feng Shui.  I then take what I ‘see’ and put it on my CAD program (Chief Architect) and print it in perspectives for my clients to now be able see what I ‘saw.’

How many local businesses do you use to support your business? Can you name them?

I work with local Contractors, especially Frank Pensiero of P&T Remodeling Specialists; local painters including Everett Kaiser Painting and also Miko Painting; local architects including Jack Franzen of J. P. Franzen Associates; local workrooms especially Yardstick Décor in Bridgeport; and local shipping services like UPS and Kinko’s.
