Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT, Sweet Mello Treats!

Three questions with Krista Mello, founder of Sweet Mello Treats.

Why did you start your business?

I’ve always loved baking as a creative outlet. I started baking with my mom when I was young, making hundreds of Christmas cookies each year to give out as gifts during the holiday season. While working in the financial services industry, I dreamed of starting my own business, but it wasn’t until after my first son was born and I became a stay-at-home mom that it became a reality.

I kicked my baking up a notch, doing lots of recipe testing and watching YouTube videos to learn new techniques, and began making themed cakes and decorated cookies for my kids’ birthdays. Family and friends were my first customers, and after receiving my cottage food license in early 2020, Sweet Mello Treats was born!

What is your best-selling product/service?

Custom decorated sugar cookies are a big seller right now, as people are beginning to have larger celebrations again.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I rely heavily on Kitchen Corner to run my business. They carry everything from cookie cutters to cake boxes to food coloring, and their customer service is the best. I don’t know what I’d do without them!

Krista would like to nominate Fit4Mom Southeast Fairfield County to be featured next!
