Four questions with Ron Herman, owner of CT CRAB CO.
Why did you start your business?
I purchased the assets of Coastal Seafoods in October of 2019 and renamed the business CT CRAB CO. My love for crab cakes was part of the attraction. Coastal had been in business for over 20 years as a gourmet crab cake manufacturer. They had a great product, but they had not really adopted modern business tools.
I saw an opportunity to create a website that would sell our product, improve our signage, develop a social media presence and increase the sales/customer service focus of the business. I guess this is how we reimagined the business and made it through the COVID Crisis.
What is your best-selling product/service?
Our best-selling product is our Premium crab cakes. They are made with a classic Maryland Style recipe. The Premium cake represents about 90% of our sales.
We sell our products to fish markets, gourmet markets, restaurants, country clubs, and to the general public on our website: www.ctcrabco.com
All of our products are high-end and are made with very little filler and over 70% crab meat. Since the acquisition, we have added an even more premium product, the Imperial! We also just launched Crab and Lobster ravioli.
Have you "reimagined" your small business?
We try to use local products wherever possible, but our largest purchase is Crabmeat. This comes from all over the world, and we pick it up at the Bronx fish markets.
