Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Olive My Stuff!

Four questions with Ali Papageorge, founder of Olive My Stuff.

Why did you start your business?

I first opened the doors in Monroe CT (Route 25), back in 2017. and then moved to Fairfield 2 years ago!

I opened a consignment shop soon after my dad, Lee Papageorge, passed away from cancer. My dad was a small business owner for over 40 years owning Oscar's Deli. My dad was taken away from us so quickly and I learned that life is so short and should be lived to the fullest every day. Owning a small consignment shop was always on my bucket list. Being a preschool teacher for 12 years, I was both scared and hesitant to start my own business. With the push of love and support from family, I followed my dream.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Olive My Stuff has gotten the attention of teenagers ages over the past year. They have organically changed the store to more of a younger, fresh vibe. This doesn't mean older women can't stop here! I offer new boutique items as well and all the brand's teens - women love.

Currently, our BEST selling brands are Brandy Melville, Birkenstocks, and Levi's.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I love to support local women by selling their products in the store! Teresa Rainieri is a local artist and widely known for the Hi-Ho painting and the Barn Swallow bird that was recently removed from the Circle Hotel. I also support Olive My Skin products, a candle company from Redding, CT, Sailor Bracelets from Mystic Knot works from Mystic, Ct. And soon-to-be Everything Labeled products from another local mom. Makes me happy to see us all flourish.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

My consignment store is different than most consignment shops. When you enter my store you don't think you are in a consignment shop. My shop has the look and feel of a boutique with all the brands and styles we all love. I keep the interaction with my IG and FB followers daily, allowing them to purchase items from the story or thread. I try to respond quickly which I think customers enjoy actually speaking with the owner!

I'm thankful to my customers and consignors every day for supporting me through the pandemic.
