Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT, Elisa Contemporary Art!

Four questions with Lisa Cooper, owner of Elisa Contemporary Art.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business in New York in 2007, as a way to make art more accessible to all in a welcoming environment. I represent artists from around the world and donate a portion of every sale back to charities helping underserved communities heal through art.

I have a gallery in Riverdale NY which opened in 2008. The Fairfield CT Art Salon started in 2017. It allows people to see art in a home environment with over 30 artists on exhibit across all mediums.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Art! We show a range of different styles and mediums. Some of the top sellers are the Cut and Layered Birch Pop Art of Texas artist Mitch McGee, the Swimmers by Hawaii artist Carol Bennett and the Abstracted Landscapes of Westport Artist, Dale Najarian and Canadian artist, Marie Danielle Leblanc.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

I work with several local artists. I work with several local framers including Rockwell Framing (Fairfield) and Framemakers (Bridgeport). I have also worked with Minuteman Press (Fairfield) for printing postcards and business cards.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

I am constantly evolving how we work and sell art. A large part of our business happens during Art Fairs...which were canceled during the pandemic. In 2020, we participated in an international online Art Fair and sold to clients in London, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, and New York! We are continuing to explore new ways to connect with clients including Pop-Up exhibits in Westport this Summer and other upcoming events.
