Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Servpro!

Four questions with John Luciani, CEO of Westport/Fairfield SERVPRO.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I saw an excellent business opportunity with opening a SERVPRO franchise. More importantly, it is a business venture that allows me to help people in the community.

I wanted to support as many local home and business owners as possible when disaster strikes - Whether that’s from extreme storms, plumbing leaks, fires, and more.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Our services aren’t necessarily “best selling” as they are on a very needed, service-based basis. However, we do find to have a much higher demand for flood cleanup in Fairfield County, namely during the recent Tropical Storm Elsa. An estimated 1 in 50 homeowners place a claim for water damage each year, accounting for roughly 24% of all insurance claims! Because water damage is so common, it’s what we help local home and business owners with the most.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

One of the biggest ways we use local business to support our business is by referring out local plumbers, dry cleaners, mold testing companies, and waterproofing companies as needed to our customers! Recently we’ve given the names Westport Plumbing and Connecticut Basement systems out to many customers with the past storm!

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

We reimagine our small business by taking it one step further than just helping people when they call us and are in need of mitigation services. We’ve been trying to get involved in our local community as much as possible by volunteering with local food drives, hosting coat drives, and giving back wherever, and whenever we can.

John would like to nominate Westport Plumbing to be featured next!
