Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT SeaSalt Baking Co.!

Four questions with Jaeca Sweeney, founder of SeaSalt Baking Co.

Why did you start your business?

Honestly, I started Seasalt Baking Co. as an outlet during the beginning of the pandemic. When we were all stuck at home I baked all the time and would give cookies and pastries to friends and neighbors. I realized that the simple act of getting a little care package at your doorstep could put a smile on people's faces during such an uncertain time. Many friends and family suggested that I start a business and really the rest is history.

What is your best-selling product/service?

The best seller is definitely the mixed box of cookies. It has two flavors (chocolate chip, toffee chip, double chocolate, halfies, oatmeal raisin, and white chocolate churro).

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

- Domino Sugar (Brooklyn NY)

- Ghirardelli Chocolate (NOT Local, but local to me! I’m from San Francisco)

I’ve also used some local high school and college students to do deliveries. I’ve also used the Go2Guys to do deliveries. Jamie and Brett are the BEST!

Also, a portion of sales got to local charities and local causes. I’ve already made donations to Bridgeport Rescue Mission, Operation Hope, Cancer Couch, Als Angels, to name a few.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

This business is truly “small” in every sense of the word. I put my heart and soul into every baked good that goes out the door. I have a cottage food license that allows me to bake out of my home kitchen but more importantly, it allows me to do something I’m passionate about while also never missing a beat with my kids at home because let's be honest, my real “job” is mom.

Jaeca would like to nominate Gells Apparel and Woopah Handstitch to be featured next!
