Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Moss Design!

Meet Meghan De Maria, founder of Moss Design.

Why did you start your business?

Meghan De Maria started Moss Design in 2015 when the renovation of her own home earned her client referrals as well as industry accolades. In the years leading up to founding Moss Design, De Maria was always interested in design and business management, having worked in both fashion and finance prior to starting her family.

An interior design education from Fairfield University after this early career brought her passion for design to the next level and set the foundation for Moss Design to take on high-end residential renovations. Within a year of founding Moss Design, De Maria was joined by a longtime friend and fellow tastemaker, Courtney Yanni.

Moss Design has grown to a team of five women and has quickly earned a reputation as a design firm to watch for their award-winning projects, seamless execution of renovations, and loyal client base.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Moss Design is committed to supporting small businesses and has cultivated a network of local artisans that ensure their projects are executed to the highest level.

From fabrics to furnishings, Meghan De Maria and Courtney Yanni are always on the lookout for fabulous, one-of-a-kind finds that will add a sophisticated, yet joyful style to homes. When sourcing for projects, provenance is very important and local, female-founded brands like Dunes & Duchess, Rosemary Hallgarten, as well as emerging artists, are consistently integral to the spaces that Moss Design creates.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Moss Design’s mantra is “Live a Great Story” and that has always been a core principle in all design decisions. In a post-Covid world, the importance of home and living our best lives has taken on greater meaning for everyone. Meghan De Maria and Courtney Yanni are more passionate than ever about the power of design to elevate our lives.

Moss Design has expanded and is busier than ever in the current climate with new projects in Tribeca, Fairfield Beach, and the Moss Design hometown of Southport, CT. With the firm’s growing team, who have embarked on new careers after starting their families, Moss Design’s personalized approach distinguishes this firm that continues to rise.
