Four questions with Tony Derbyshire.

Why did I start my business?

I was tired of corporate America and I had a young daughter at home that I have never seen. I wanted to do work where I was selling something I know, and I grew up in Fairfield County, left, and came back. I came back to settle down and raise a family because I believe it's a great place to do both. I became a Realtor because of its significance.

Helping people through the purchase and sale of a home is so much more than a transaction. It's a significant life event. Getting paid to sell an area that I know and love and helping people navigate such a significant life event are the two biggest reasons why I got into the business.

What is your best-selling product/service?

This is a little tricky as the process is simple. I find buyers for my listings and homes for my buyers. I also find tenants for my landlords and investment properties but my investors.

What my 'best selling product or service' is, I believe, is the reduction of preventable surprises. There are surprises that come up in any event. If I do my job, there will be as few as possible because I understand the process. Surprises cost us time and money. As important, especially for a guy my age, when we experience preventable surprises, we can actually feel ourselves age.

So my best selling service is my expertise and my ability to anticipate things that can keep us from having the best outcome possible. I tell people I bring people together under significant circumstances to create the best possible outcome for all involved. I do that best when I've kept everybody informed and created a low surprise factor.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business(products and services) and can you name them?

I use contractors constantly do to work on either side of my business. An insurance professional that I referred just helped a buyer a week after she moved into her new townhouse after an accident that started a fire. I use attorneys and loan officers and appraisers and landscapers. I set up movers and even refer people to Estate Sales professionals.

If I'm working with buyers that are new to town I suggest places for them to eat or gyms to check out or anything else to send them to depending on their interests.

Have you 'reimagined' your small business?

Yes. I believe we have to do this from time to time if we are to continue to grow. I recently moved to Keller Williams because their set of beliefs are in alignment with mine. Additionally, their technology is impressive and will help me as I continue to learn new ways to effectively engage the community. Real Estate is a people business, and it's easy to dismiss the importance of the back of the house, the operational side, of my line of work. Keller Williams has already helped me reimagine myself not just as a sales professional or a Realtor, but as a business owner serving our community.
