Three questions with Daryn Reyman-Lock, founder of Sawdust and Strata.
Why did you start your business?
I started my business because I realized I had a unique set of skills that could be applied to various different organizations within the heritage/cultural sector, but also had wider applicability in development, construction, and government. It is also very important to me to help communities and individuals connect with their history and create a sense of place in doing so.
What is your best-selling product/service?
It changes depending on the time of year, but in general historic research. I do a lot of collections management and curation for different historical societies and museums, but I also do a lot of research for private homeowners and collectors.
I support locals anytime I can. I used Fairfield-owned Designsite to create my webpage; I liaise with different community organizations and other Connecticut-based preservation specialists and consultants; the graphic designer - Scott Kuykendall - was local until recently. If I have meetings with clients or potential clients, I always meet them at local restaurants and coffee houses.
