Fairfield Library Exhibits "Cardboard Zoo"

Fairfield, Conn. – Fairfield Public Library has been taken over by animals—in a good way.

Through the end of March, the Main Library at 1080 Old Post Road in Fairfield will house nineteen cardboard animal sculptures crafted by 9th grade art students from Fairfield Ludlowe High School. The students in Virginia Zimmerman’s 3-D Foundations class used paper, glue guns and recycled cardboard to painstakingly create the large-scale, three-dimensional animals—including a moose, flamingo, hippo and raccoon—over a six-week period. They were required to use principles of anatomy, structural engineering and 3-D design to construct their animals, and the results are the intricate creations you will see stalking the shelves of the Library.

“During our remote learning experience as a result of Covid, students had limited access to supplies,” said Michele Hermsen, Art Department Coordinator for Fairfield Public Schools. “Innovation and imagination were essential for success. The students used found objects like cereal boxes, pizza boxes, milk cartons, etc., to execute their artistic visions.”

“The Library is happy to partner with our local high school community in displaying these works of art,” said Jan Fisher, Deputy Town Librarian.  “The limitations imposed on the students by remote learning during Covid make their creations all the more amazing.”

The cardboard sculptures can be found in the Main Lobby, Adult Reading Room, Children’s Room and Teen Room at Main Library. A reception for the student artists will be held on Thursday evening, March 9, at 6:00pm in the Library’s Periodicals Room. The public is welcome to attend.
