Fairfield Human Services Commission Launches New Committee for People with Disabilities

Fairfield, CT - The Town of Fairfield’s Human Services Commission, led by Nancy Legare, its Chairwoman, recently passed a resolution to create a Committee for People with Disabilities. Kris Burbank, a member of the Human Services Commission, has been appointed Chairwoman of this new Committee.

The Human Services Commission recently conducted a town-wide survey that was designed to determine the needs of people with disabilities in Fairfield. The key findings of the survey include: Sixty-nine percent of respondents are involved in some way with other people who cope with disabilities. Thirty-eight percent of respondents are either caregivers for a person with a disability over the age of 65 or are themselves over the age of 65 and have a disability. Sixty-eight percent of the caregivers responding give care in a home setting. Seventy-five percent indicated that services for people with disabilities “could be improved.” Eighty-two percent support a town-wide Committee to address four top issues, including transportation, housing, advocacy and education. The complete survey report is available on the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities’ Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/BigelowCenter/.

The new Committee was created following the town-wide survey and the Human Services Commission’s Community Stakeholders meeting which consisted of representatives of the Fairfield Public Schools and community service providers, along with individuals with disabilities and their families. Representatives from the Disability Rights of Connecticut and the Westport Commission for People with Disabilities provided important information to assist in formulating several goals for the Commission, including the need for a Committee for People with Disabilities and the importance of a review of resources to identify opportunities that can support individuals with disabilities. The Town seeks to ensure that Fairfield is a welcoming community where individuals with disabilities can lead active and fulfilling lives.

Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau said, “The Town of Fairfield welcomes the opportunity to work with people with disabilities and their families in any way possible to improve their lives. I wish to thank the Human Services Commission for conducting this important survey and also commend its members for establishing this new Committee.”

The Committee for People with Disabilities is open to all members of the public including area professionals as well as residents who have or care for someone with a disability. Anyone interested in participating should contact Kris Burbank at kkburbank63@gmail.com or call the Bigelow Center at 203-256-3166. The first meeting is expected to be held in September.
