Fairfield Human Services Commission Launches New Committee for People with Disabilities

The Human Services Commission recently conducted a town-wide survey that was designed to determine the needs of people with disabilities in Fairfield. The key findings of the survey include: Sixty-nine percent of respondents are involved in some way with other people who cope with disabilities. Thirty-eight percent of respondents are either caregivers for a person with a disability over the age of 65 or are themselves over the age of 65 and have a disability. Sixty-eight percent of the caregivers responding give care in a home setting. Seventy-five percent indicated that services for people with disabilities “could be improved.” Eighty-two percent support a town-wide Committee to address four top issues, including transportation, housing, advocacy and education. The new Committee was created following the town-wide survey and the Human Services Commission’s Community Stakeholders meeting which consisted of representatives of the Fairfield Public Schools and community service providers, along with individuals with disabilities and their families. Representatives from the Disability Rights of Connecticut and the Westport Commission for People with Disabilities provided important information to assist in formulating several goals for the Commission, including the need for a Committee for People with Disabilities and the importance of a review of resources to identify opportunities that can support individuals with disabilities. The Town seeks to ensure that Fairfield is a welcoming community where individuals with disabilities can lead active and fulfilling lives.
