Fairfield Human Services Receives Caregiver Grant from the S.W. CT Agency on Aging

Fairfield, CT - The Town of Fairfield's Director of Human and Social Services, Julie DeMarco, is pleased to announce the department has received a grant from the Southwestern Connecticut Area Agency on Aging for programs to help educate caregivers in the community and to provide for caregivers short-term respite care.

The educational program is a five-part Lunch and Learn Series focused on caregiver support. "Caregivers might need to navigate social service systems, call doctors while at work, advocate for the care receiver, and take care of their day-to-day needs, while trying to do all of those same things their own families," Mrs. DeMarco said. "Each month we've invited experts to provide important information to caregivers to feel confident and supported."

Subjects include Adult Day Care: Is it Right for your Loved One? Presented by David Magner of Jewish Senior Services; Where to Get the Help You Need presented by Kathleen Regan of the Southwestern Connecticut Agency on Aging;  Caregiver Training: What you Need to Know presented by Katie Vanovitch of Senior Helper;  First, Care for Yourself  presented by Lauren Lanham; and finally,  Managing Difficult Conversations about Care presented by Maplewood of Southport. There is no charge for the program and lunch. Advance registration is required.

In partnership with Shamrock Home Care, the respite grant will provide short-term respite care for caregivers, providing temporary relief to a primary caregiver from the continuous support and care of an adult who is elderly or disabled and dependent on others. Services include companionship, involvement in the person's activities of daily living, meal preparation, light housekeeping and personal hygiene tasks. Applications and information are available at Fairfield Social Services.
