Lt. Governor Bysiewicz and First Selectman Tetreau Launch Fairfield 2020 Census Efforts

Hartford/Fairfield, CT - Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau, and other state and local elected officials met this week at the Fairfield Public Library to launch the Town’s Complete Count Committee for the 2020 Census. An accurate census count is critically important to Connecticut as it is the foundation to determine federal funding allocations.

“The data collected by the 2020 Census will affect funding allocations for many years to come,” Lt. Gov. Bysiewicz said. “When I launched our state-wide census committee in February, I was committed to ensuring that Connecticut would be the best counted state in the nation—but we can’t achieve a complete count without leaders at the local level doing their part too. It’s great to add Fairfield to the growing list of list of communities launching their Local Complete Count Committees to plan for the 2020 Census.”

In February, Lt. Gov. Bysiewicz launched the Connecticut Complete Count Committee to inform and help direct the State's efforts in the upcoming 2020 Census and to assist municipal governments with forming Local Complete Count Committees. Similar to the statewide committee, Fairfield’s Complete Count Committee will analyze previous census undercounts and recommend strategies to achieve a full count in Fairfield for the upcoming census.

First Selectman Mike Tetreau said, “I encourage all Fairfield residents to participate in the 2020 Census. It is very important that every person in our town be accounted for accurately and that we ensure Fairfield and Connecticut are adequately allotted federal funding.”

Roughly 22 percent of Connecticut is considered “hard to reach” communities. Although undercounts have been a persistent problem, the 2020 Census will be the first census residents can fill out online. Fairfield’s Public Library will provide all the resources necessary for residents to complete their census even if they do not have access to a computer or translation services at home.
