Sen. Hwang Offers Reaction to Georgia Shootings

Fairfield, CT - Senator Tony Hwang offered the following statement in reaction to the senseless shootings yesterday in Georgia, in which eight people -- at least six of them of Asian ethnicity -- were killed...

“I am emotionally shaken and deeply upset by the continued escalation of violence and hate that came to a deadly tipping point in Georgia. 

“There is no place in this country for this kind of hate and unconscionable violence against any person regardless of gender, race, religion, orientation, disability or ability, or any difference in political thought.

“These senseless actions are taking the focus off the real strides that are being made both by women and minorities. Every day there are women who are shattering the glass ceilings previously containing their potential contributions to the world and especially this country.  Women must be equal partners in the progress of humankind.

“It is time for the entire nation to realize and celebrate that every person, no matter their gender identification, race or anything else, can and must be able to live, grow, and achieve - and that our society as a whole will be better for those successes. There is a very dangerous undercurrent of ‘white male supremacy’ that is fueling certain fringe populations to lash out as a new ‘normal’ emerges. 

“In the original words by Robert Grosseteste: ‘United we stand, divided we fall.’  I am telling you now, the time is long overdue to stand up and move forward - together.

“Throughout my life and my time as a state senator I have witnessed some of the most heinous and hate-charged killings. I have made it a priority of my legislative career to passionately speak out against hate, bias and violence in our society.”
