Bipartisan Fairfield Delegation Welcomes SHU Cheer Team to State Capitol for Nat'l Championship Congratulations

Hartford, CT — On Wednesday, March 23, Senator Tony Hwang (R-28) was joined by Representatives Laura Devlin (R-132), Jennifer Leeper (D-134), and Cristin McCarthy-Vahey (D-133) as they welcomed the 2021-2022 Sacred Heart University (SHU) Cheer Team and university staff to the Connecticut State Capitol to award them individual citations and acknowledge the team’s remarkable journey to their third Consecutive National Championship.

“This team of friends and teammates caring for each other have proven that a global pandemic for the past few years could not dampen the resiliency or perseverance of these student athletes from their goal of excellence. They focused on their pursuit of a 3rd consecutive national championship.” said Senator Hwang. “These elite student athletes are the pride of our state, SHU and Fairfield.”

“Celebrating our National Championship at the State Capitol is an honor. Thank you to Senator Tony Hwang and our state officials for taking time to recognize the hard work that we have put into the sport throughout the season. Beyond the recognition we received from the University, this visit is a highlight for our team - especially the freshmen members - of our fun, busy and successful year together,” said CJ Sereno, Head Coach of the SHU Cheer Team.

“We are not only proud of our talented young women and their coach, but we appreciate the continued support from Senator Hwang and the rest of our delegation throughout the year and, especially, for arranging this recognition for the team. It meant a lot to them,” said SHU President John J. Petillo.

“Being recognized at this level is very meaningful for the girls following a hard season. We appreciate our officials taking the time to recognize this accomplishment,” said Charlie Dowd, SHU Deputy Athletic Director.
