CT Psychologists Select Sen. Tony Hwang as “Distinguished Legislator of the Year”

Orange, CT - In a Nov. 4 ceremony at the Yale West Convention Center in Orange, the Connecticut Psychological Association (CPA) presented Sen. Tony Hwang with its 2022 “Distinguished Legislator of the Year” award.

“This award acknowledges Sen. Hwang’s track record of advocating for and supporting health and wellness, the interests of children and families, and investment in education,” said CPA President Jennifer M. Doran. “Sen. Hwang has a deep understanding of and commitment to ameliorating the effects of the current mental health crisis. He is a cornerstone for the 28th District, a true champion of the people, and an incredible leader in and for his community.”

“This recognition from our state’s highly respected association of psychology professionals is a tremendous honor,” Sen. Hwang said. “I remain committed to addressing the mental health crisis and inequities in healthcare that impact CT residents.”

Sen. Hwang, who serves as ranking senator on the Connecticut legislature’s public health and insurance committees, co-sponsored legislation this year to expand mental health and behavioral services for children.

“We must continue working in bipartisan fashion to help children who need mental health support,” said Sen. Hwang, who has been a vocal advocate for in-person learning and local control over masking mandates since the start of the pandemic. “The Covid-driven disruption, isolation and uncertainty wreaked havoc on children, and this legislation helps us to better connect students to crucial mental health services both at home and at school.”
