Fairfield Named a Top Safe Community in Connecticut

Fairfield, CT - First Selectman Mike Tetreau and Police Chief Gary MacNamara are pleased to announce that the Town of Fairfield has been named a top safe community in Connecticut. SafeWise, an online safety resource that helps families and communities make informed decisions, recently unveiled its report on the 20 Safest Communities in Connecticut.

Police Chief Gary MacNamara stated, “This is a great reflection of how hard the women and men of the Fairfield Police Department work with the community to make it safer. We know we need the community as much as they need us. While we certainly are happy to be ranked so high, we will continue to work to make Fairfield safer.”

To compile this report, SafeWise reviewed the 2016 FBI crime report statistics and population data. Communities that fell below identified population thresholds (21,995) or that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI were excluded from the ranking system.

SafeWise’s evaluation is based on the number of reported violent crimes in each community. If there was a tie, SafeWise also factored in the number of property crimes. To level the playing field, SafeWise calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each community which makes it easier to directly compare the likelihood of these crimes occurring in communities with vastly different populations.

First Selectman Tetreau said, “We are very proud to receive this high honor. Keeping the public safe is our top priority. I would like to give a special thanks to our dedicated police, fire, and telecommunicators who work tirelessly to protect and serve our community. I also want to thank our resident volunteers who serve on the Town’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)." To register for CERT training, please print and return the CERT Registration Form.
