Every dollar raised supports the efforts to fund cancer research and education, to help prevent the disease and aid those fighting the battle. Each whisker grown allows us to embrace our hair, which many cancer patients lose during treatment.
Acting Police Chief Chris Lyddy has authorized members of the FPD to participate in this event and has waived the standard facial hair grooming policy during the month of November in order to allow officers to grow out their facial hair in support of this national campaign. “No Shave November” challenges participants to forgo shaving in order to provoke conversation and raise cancer awareness. Members of the FPD are encouraged to donate the money that would typically be spent on shaving and grooming to this cause.
This year, the FPD has joined the online fundraising efforts of The Connecticut Cancer Foundation by creating an online fundraising team where the FPD will be competing to raise funds against a number of other law enforcement agencies in Connecticut.
“No Shave November” will especially help 15 year-old Wes, the FPD’s “No Shave November” Ambassador. Wes is bravely battling metastatic Ewing's sarcoma and because he is the FPD’s Ambassador, his family will receive a large grant based on what “No Shave November” raises. The rest of the money will go to Connecticut cancer patients throughout the year.
Each day, 22,000 people die from cancer worldwide (WHO). There's a good chance that someone you know and love will be affected by this disease. Nearly half of cancer diagnoses and deaths are preventable. Each year, participants around the globe put down their razors and join the fight against cancer.
