Kids Spared When Metal Spike Goes Through Car Window

FAIRFIELD, CT: Late afternoon, Saturday, June 1, two children, aged 2 and 3, restrained in car seats, were spared from life-threatening injuries due to their family's good fortune. While traveling Lockwood Road in Fairfield, a ten-inch metal spike was picked up and propelled by the rotating cutting blades of a landscaper's commercial lawn mower. The spike traveled 20 feet striking the passing passenger vehicle, breaking through the rear passenger side window, passing within inches in front of the faces of both children. The ten-inch spike then ricocheted off the interior glass on the opposing side, finally resting between the two children on the floor.

Both children were evaluated for injuries by Fire-Rescue and American Medical Response personnel and found to have only minor injuries due to the shattered glass. LT Robert Smith, commanding Engine 3, said, "In just a matter of inches an injury may have occurred resulting in a very tragic story."
