Environmental Concerns RE Aquarion Plan to Divert Bpt System Water

Fairfield, CT - Mill River Wetland Committee (MRWC) announced it has filed for Intervenor status, along with the Town of Fairfield, and other environmental advocacy groups in response to Aquarion Water’s application to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) seeking approval to transfer up to 14.2 million gallons of water per day for 25 years from its Greater Bridgeport System to lower Fairfield County. If approved, this would double the water volume Aquarion currently diverts to those towns from Greater Bridgeport through their Southwest Regional Pipeline.

MRWC’s petition asks that Aquarion be transparent with their analysis and reasons regarding the need for this substantial increase in volume of water diversion, as well as the impact upon water quality, the environment, water usage, and conservation.

MRWC has taken this action to support the petition filed by the Town of Fairfield Department of Conservation as well as to bolster the voices of other residents concerned about the environmental impact of Aquarion’s application. “We want to be the key resource where Fairfielders can come to learn more about the issues affecting our local environment. Certainly a change of this magnitude should be well understood by those that it will impact environmentally and financially,” said MRWC President, Jon Dilley.
