The Elementary Enrichment Committee (EEC) was formed more than ten years ago with the primary goal of providing common experiences for all students who attend Harrison’s elementary schools. While this goal has remained unchanged, the EEC’s impact on the community has blossomed.
The EEC Community Carnival has grown each year since it began five years ago and continues to raise funds to support programs for students at all four district elementary schools. However, in addition to serving as a fundraiser, the EEC Carnival has become a community event. Hundreds of Harrison families enjoyed the festivities, games, rides and tasty treats from local food trucks at the fifth annual EEC Community Carnival.
According to Superintendent of Schools, Louis Wool, “The dedication of parents from all four elementary schools is remarkable. Their collective efforts have impacted our school community and support the district in its work to provide opportunities for every student who attends Harrison’s elementary schools.”
The EEC sponsors programs including visiting authors, theater arts programs, and a variety of cultural arts programs. Author Karen Kaufman Orloff visited with the district's K-2 students, shared her writing process and walked students through the process of creating a picture book. She also will conduct writing workshops with 3rd grade students throughout the district. The visit, which was part of the K-5 Visiting Author Program was coordinated by the elementary library media specialists and funded by the Elementary Enrichment Committee.
In addition, the EEC sponsors a community outreach initiative each year. Each elementary school collects food and parent volunteers from all four schools gathers to assemble breakfast bags to be donated to Feeding Westchester, an organization dedicated to eliminating hunger in Westchester County. The EEC is comprised parent representatives from each school. The committee works collaboratively to support and raise funds to provide enrichment programs at all four Harrison elementary schools.
