Youth Book Discussion Re Substance Use to be Held in Simsbury

The Town of Simsbury Department of Community and Social Services and Simsbury-based nonprofit, A Promise to Jordan, are inviting adults and youth aged 12 to 17 to discuss the book, “#OneChoice: How Ten Seconds Can Change Your Life”, by Nick and Jack Savage, as told by their mother Becky Savage.

The discussion will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, from 6:00 to 8:00 P. M. at Simsbury Public Library, 725 Hopmeadow St., Simsbury.

Nick and Jack Savage both passed away at a graduation party in June 2015 after mixing alcohol with opioids.  They were just 19 and 18 years old, respectively, Nick having just completed his freshman year in college, and Jack having just graduated from high school.  Their mother, Becky, is a substance use prevention specialist, and has been a registered nurse for over 30 years.  She wrote the book in the voices of her two eldest sons, and founded The 525 Foundation after their deaths, to educate teens and families and raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol and prescription drug misuse and abuse.

“This is an important book for teens and families to read to understand that this can happen to ANYONE,” notes Lisa Gray, Founder and Executive Director of A Promise to Jordan.  “Neither Nick nor Jack were known substance users.  Their parents had always talked to them about the dangers of misusing substances.  These were good boys who came from a great family, and no one would have ever imagined that this would happen to them…until it did.  One choice, one tragic mistake ended their lives and forever changed the lives of their loved ones.”
Free copies of the book are available by contacting A Promise to Jordan at (860) 390-1391 or info@apromisetojordan.org.

A Promise to Jordan is named in honor of Jordan Arakelian, a Simsbury resident who died of a heroin and fentanyl overdose on June 30, 2018 at the age of 24.  His mother, Lisa Gray, started the 501c3 organization in his memory to raise awareness and eliminate the stigma of addiction, assist people in accessing quality care, and give hope that recovery is possible to those struggling with addiction.
