Westchester High School Twins Create 1,000 Lap Swim-A-Thon To Raise Money For Nursing Beyond Borders

Swim-A-Thon To Raise Money To Help Impoverished Children

Isabella and Alexandra Block, twins, who live in Hartsdale and are seniors, honor students and varsity swimmers at Ardsley High School and members of the Condors swim team, are holding a Swim-A-Thon on Sunday, October 7th from 10am to 1pm at the Ardsley Middle School Pool located at 700 Ashford Avenue in Ardsley.  The goal of their Swim-A-Thon is to complete 1,000 laps in this three-hour period.   They have enlisted the help of their varsity and club swim teammates to participate to accomplish this goal.  Ultimately, they hope to raise $1,000 for Nursing Beyond Borders, a non-profit organization that sends nurses to some of the most impoverished communities and orphanages around the world to improve healthcare and longevity for underserved populations.  They have set up a Facebook page where donations can be made directly for their event: https://www.facebook.com/donate/923366557853190/923366564519856/

Isabella and Alexandra have been swimming competitively for ten years and have a passion for nursing and helping others which started when they were counselors at day camp.  The girls were influenced by watching the camp nurse over the summers compassionately tend to injured children, and were impacted by the way the nurse could make the fear and hurt go away.  Both girls are on the volunteer ambulance corps in their town of Ardsley as well.

Isabella and Alexandra developed the idea to use their passion for swimming as a way to help an organization that focuses on helping others less fortunate.  Alexandra says, “I love swimming and being able to do that while raising money is an amazing opportunity.  Supporting nurses so they can help people on a large scale is a great cause and I couldn’t be more excited about it!”  Her sister Isabella says, “This event means a lot to me because it combines the two things I am most passionate about—swimming and nursing.  I love how this swim-a-thon allows me to bring these two interests together.”

Nursing Beyond Borders is a 501(c)3 public charity which exists to deliver healthcare and education to children and their communities on a global scale.  The focus is on preventing disease before it starts by sending nurses to serve in their network of partnered orphanages, shelters, underserved schools, clinics, and their surrounding communities.  Through their focused healthcare initiatives and educational presentations, they empower children and families to improve not only their own lives, but also to impact the lives of future generations.
