Forgotten Stories: Bisa Butler's Photographic Inspiration on June 7

A virtual look at Bisa Butler's first solo museum exhibition and the photographs which inspired the works on June 7 from 1 to 2pm

From documentary black and white photographs taken during the Great Depression to family snapshots, Bisa Butler draws inspiration from these photographic images to create her colorful, multi-layered quilts. Using vintage photos as a starting point, Butler transforms African American history and cultural identities into works of social statement.

Her work raises questions about the social documentary role of the photograph and offers alternative ways of seeing and understanding the societal fabric that shapes the world in which we live. Join KMA Assistant Curator of Exhibitions and Programs Emily Handlin for a virtual tour that explores the history behind the photographs and their relationship to Butler's work.
