Review: Fan Yourself Funny at 'Menopause: The Musical'

What happens when four middle-aged women meet while shopping in Bloomingdales? A total laugh riot filled with witty re-writes of songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Well maybe not in real life but certainly in Menopause the Musical at the Westchester Broadway Theatre. Get tickets soon because they are selling out this short run that ends on March 24!

The 90-minute musical kicks off with a fitting song Change, Change, Change and continues through two-dozen more songs with laugh out loud parody lyrics. For example, the song Hot Stuff becomes Hot Flash and Stayin’ Alive is converted to Stayin’ Awake. Every song embraces one of the many dramas surrounding menopause.

Each of the four characters comes from a different walk of life as they experience their change of life. The hippy Earth Mother is played by Megan Cavanagh (most recognized as Marla Hooch, from the movie, A League of Their Own). Donna J. Huntley plays the career-focused Professional Woman. Roberta Wall epitomizes the typical American, or more specifically Iowa Housewife. Rounding out the cast is Debby Rosenthal as the Soap Star who is not growing old gracefully. Tony Award winner, Seth Greenleaf directed this comedic quartet.

The facial contortions, physical humor, and comic interplay had the audience roaring with laughter, most likely because many of them have found themselves experiencing the same situations. The musical covers everything from hot flashes - or as my sister fondly calls them power surges; memory loss; night sweats; sex or the lack thereof; body changes; food cravings; cottage cheese thighs; and dealing with parents and kids at the same time.

All kidding aside, the vocal power and harmonies of these ladies wowed the audience. Of special note was Huntley’s What’s Love Got To Do With It? which rocked the house. The choreography was simple but effective mixing in dances like the hustle, cotton-eyed Joe, and a classic chorus kick line. There is audience interaction and participation, so embrace the moment and enjoy this feel good musical for what it is, a celebration of women and sisterhood.

This is a perfect show for a girl’s night out, but don’t let that stop you men out there. Keep the kids at home for this one. Very fitting that International Women’s Day is March 8 – so grab your friends this month and head on over to the WBT to celebrate!

Menopause The Musical
® is a groundbreaking celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the middle of, or have survived “The Change.” Now celebrating 17 years of female empowerment through hilarious musical comedy, Menopause The Musical® has evolved as a "grassroots" movement of women who deal with life adjustments after 40 by embracing each other and the road ahead.

Set in a department store, four women meet while shopping for a black lace bra at a lingerie sale. After noticing unmistakable similarities among one another, the cast jokes about their woeful hot flashes, mood swings, wrinkles, weight gain and much more. These women form a sisterhood and unique bond with the entire audience as they rejoice in celebrating that menopause is no longer “The Silent Passage.”

Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, Menopause The Musical® is a celebration of women who find themselves at any stage of “The Change.” The laughter-filled 90-minute production gets audience members out of their seats and singing along to parodies from classic pop songs of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s.
