Lake George Winter Carnival ~ A Hot Spot for Winter Fun

Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains is a NY State summer vacation spot that virtually all NY’ers know about. Lake George. But did you know that Lake George is also a hot spot of activity in winter? In February, the Village plays host to the Lake George Winter Carnival. Originally started in 1961 it has, over 50 years later, become a staple of winter in the area for both locals and tourists alike.

The Lake George Winter Carnival takes place each weekend throughout February (Saturdays and Sundays from 2/2/2019-2/24/2019), each weekend has a variety of activities for people of all ages.

Enjoy the warmth of tasty samples during the chowder, chili, BBQ, and chicken wing cook-offs. Witness the always hilarious, creative and fun outhouse races as well as ATV races, polar plunges, parades, fireworks, and more!

One of the most popular events each year is the Outhouse Races where teams push or pull an outhouse (Creatively Decorated) on skis across the ice. This year ‘s winners were the Team from Adirondack Scenic TNT.

Members of the Brewster Rotary Club were invited to join the Lake George Rotary Club on its float in the Opening day parade. Rotarians Paul Fucito and Peter Carey assisted in decorating the Lake George Club’s float and rode the parade route. The float came in 6th place.

Many locals and visitors also take advantage of the frozen lake to cross country ski and snowmobile. There are also several trails through the adjoining mountains.  “To take my snowmobile up the trail to the top of Prospect Mountain and look out over the lake at this time of year," stated Paul Fucito, "I can’t think of a more beautiful sight”.

If you need to get away from the cold for a bit, hop on over to Wax ‘n Wix at 38 Montcalm St, Lake George to make your own candle in a variety of shapes and scents. Right across from the festivities at Shepard’s Park, you can visit Adirondack Winery at 285 Canada Street for a wine tasting or one of their special hot mulled wines.

Several restaurants in the area also offer food and drink specials as well as Ice Bars. The Adirondack Brew Pub being one. Their color changing lights embedded in an ice sculpture that surrounds an outdoor fireplace astounds and is by far the most popular of the Ice bars. It sits on an outdoor deck and there are several tables carved out of ice in the form of chess pieces and there is live entertainment and dance floor. Their Ice Bar event was held the last weekend in January and the first weekend in February. But it isn’t too late to enjoy their huge selection of in house brewed ales and lagers along with wines from local wineries. The food is excellent and the wait staff is quick, courteous and extremely knowledgeable. Best of all is it is affordable.
